Example

A horse pulls up a $225 lb$ man at a speed of $2ft/s$ as shown below. What is the power exerted by the horse in lifting this man?

The tension in the rope is the weight of the man. And from the equation above the power should be this tension man times the velocity the horse is moving. This is $225 lb \times 2 ft/s ~=~ 550 ftlb/s ~=~ 1 hp$.
